Hey – Paul here and with Tekken 7 about to be released I thought I would do a little bit about the Tournament winners and Sponsors of the tournaments. The Tekken Games were always a Favourite of mine.  I loved learning the history and backgrounds of each character and how a lot of them tie in with each other, but I could be here ages trying to explain all the story that is just basically ‘winning the tournament’. Of course the main characters of the story Arc is the Mishima /Kazama family…and if you think your family had issues that’s nothing compared to these!

The tournament was created as the King of Iron Fist Tournament which is a  world-wide martial arts competition that is held infrequently and is hosted by the Mishima Zaibatsu. It draws renowned fighters from all around the globe, the winner of the tournament would then have control of the Mishima Zaibatsu Corporation.

*side note the release dates I put on are when the games were released in Europe*

Tekken 1 (1995)

The First King of Iron fist Tournament was held By  Heihachi Mishima and had a cash prize of  $1 billion dollars. One of the fighters who entered the tournament was Kazuya Mishima who is Heihachis son and being the great dad he is he decided to throw Kazuya off a cliff when he was Five to see if he was strong and worthy to be heir of the corporation one day. Kazuya survived the fall but was left with a massive Scar on his chest, the fall also activated a devil Gene (spoilers) making him gain strength and power. This helped him climb back up the cliff with a thirst for revenge. Now 21 and an undefeated  fighter, the only near loss was to Paul Phoenix who is in the Tournament to beat Kazuya.  Kazuya ends up in the final against his Dad who he beats unconscious and throws him off the same cliff which he was thrown off, making Kazuya the winner and also owner of the corporation.

Tekken 2 (1996)

Two years after the first tournament and Kazuya has made the corporation even more corrupt than it originally was. One of the things he is involved in is smuggling animals which sends Jun Kazama over to find him and arrest him. All the while the devil is trying to take over Kazuya’s mind, Heihachi has now climbed back up the cliff and is after sweet revenge. Kazuya decides to hold the tournament with a prize of $1 trillion dollars knowing his father will turn up and also rid him of all other competitors. Before the tournament begins however Jun finds Kazuya but instead of arresting him she finds herself attracted to him and gets pregnant with his child Jin Kazama. Heihachi makes it past all of the fighters and again goes up against his son but this time the devil takes over Kazuya’s body transforming him into a devil like creature – however Kazuyas mind is conflicted since he has meant Jun and an Angel sides within him. This is the advantage Heihachi needs and defeats him, he then decides to throw his son into a volcano making him father of the year and also owner again of the corporation.

Tekken 3 (1998)

it’s been 19 years since the last tournament and Heihachi now has a special forces division called tekken force and while out on an exhibition they come across a monster called Ogre who then disappears. Heihachi learns the Ogre is behind a series of fighters missing or dead so decides he wants to capture it to have the power to himself. One of the people Ogre attacked is Jun Kazama who had been living quietly with her son Jin. With his mum missing, maybe dead, Jin is driven with rage and is confronted by the Devil who brands his left arm and possesses him. Jin seeks his Grandfather Heihachi to teach him to fight and go against Ogre, he agrees knowing he can use him to get Ogre so teaches him & then announces the next King of iron fist Tournament.  In the tournament, at a large temple, Paul Phoenix defeats Ogre and walks away from the tournament, thinking he is victorious. However, Ogre transforms into its true form of a monstrous beast, and Jin finally confronts it. Jin battles and defeats Ogre, and the being completely dissolves. However, Jin is suddenly gunned down by a squadron of Tekken Forces led by Heihachi, who, no longer needing him, personally fires a final shot into his grandson’s head.  However Jin, revived by the Devil within him, reawakens and dispatches the soldiers, smashing Heihachi through the wall of the temple. Jin catches Heihachi right before he hits the ground, and he looks up to see Jin sprout feathery wings and fly off into the night. So The Winner is Jin but Heihachi is still in charge.

Tekken 4 (2002)

Its been two years since the last tournament and Heihachi has been busy with Ogres blood trying to make himself immortal but it fails as he does not have the devil gene. This makes him want to track down his Grandson Jin who has been missing since the last tournament. Heihachi also learns Kazuya’s body is being kept in the labs of the G-Corporation and realising that could be a way to get the devil gene blood he sends his Tekken force to retrieve his body. When the force arrives though they are completely wiped out by Kazuya who has been revived by the G-Corporation. Jin meanwhile is in Brisbane and learning Karate to forget everything his Grandfather taught him after his betrayal. Heihachi announces the tournament luring Kazuya and Jin in the hope of getting the devil gene, in the 7th stage Kazuya and Jin are to fight but before this happens Jin gets captured by the Tekken force. So Kazuya is the winner and goes up against his dad. Father and son clash in battle, and Heihachi wins. After the fight, Heihachi leads Kazuya to Hon-Maru, a Mishima Dojo in the woods where an unconscious Jin has been chained. When the two enter the building, Kazuya’s body is suddenly taken over by Devil, who knocks out Heihachi and then subconsciously taunts Jin, which causes him to wake up with his Devil powers activated. Jin wakes up and breaks through the chains in rage. Jin fights Kazuya and wins. Heihachi regains consciousness and goes to fight against the exhausted Jin, but is also defeated. As Jin is about to finish Heihachi, a vision of his mother Jun appears so Jin spares his Grandfather and flies off. Meaning again that Heihachi is declared the winner as no one witnessed Jin win and fly off.

Tekken 5 (2005)

Moments after Jin flies off a squadron of Jack 4’s attack both Heihachi and Kazuya who for a brief moment work together to fend them off before Kazuya throws his Dad into the Jacks to escape.  The jacks then pile on Heihachi while one activates a bomb and the entire Hon-Maru goes up in flames. The only witness is an mysterious agent called Raven who relays to his command that Heihachi is Dead. With the news of his death being broadcasted around the world it seems the end for the Mishima Zaibatsu Corporation, however someone has taken over the Corporation and two months later announces the next tournament. The person in question is Jinpachi Mishima who is Heihachi’s Dad. He was confined underneath the Hon-Maru by Heihachi but when it was blown up he was freed and of  course being a Mishima he has the devil gene. Only this time he has announced the tournament in the hope someone will defeat him before he can be fully took over by the devil. In the end it is Jin who makes it to the final and beats his Great Grandad who then dissolves into nothing – making Jin the proud owner of the Mishima Zaibatsu Corporation .

Tekken 6 (2009)

The world is in disarray and Jin is now fully in control of the Corporation with the only person who can oppose him is Kazuya who is head of the G-Corporation. Heihachi is in hiding and trying to get the company from Jin while a Soldier by the name of Lars has rebelled against the Tekken force and is on the run (Lars ends up being Heihachi’s son). The story is different this time as an evil being by the name of Azrael is said to have birthed Kazuya and Jin within the world to awaken him and destroy the world and is one of the roots of Devil. In other words he is hinted to be responsible for starting the Devil Gene within the Mishima family. After another rematch with his half-brother, Kazuya, Lars confronts Azazel himself and later Jin, who admits that the reason for him launching the war is to awaken Azazel and kill him, which would free the world from a greater threat than the war itself, as well as free himself from the devil gene, as he can only have a physical form through negative energies of the world. Revealing that Azazel can only be destroyed by someone with the Devil Gene, Jin confronts and punches the revived Azazel, sending them both plummeting to the desert. While Raven unearths Jin’s body in the desert he notes that Jin still has the Devil mark on his arm.

So there you have it…the winners of Tekken and just a bit of history surrounding the Tekken story arcs!  Who do you think will win Tekken 7?? Will it be someone not from the Mishima/Kazama bloodline (doubt it)? And will some be thrown into a volcano again or worse? Myself cannot wait to find out!
